NOTES for 17June2000 Case 5 Nov 2002 Decayed mid-level maritime debris A line of maritime cells moves very slowly from the SE over KSC and to the NNE. There is sporadic lightning on the N end of the line from 1320 to 1340. Then 2 CG flashes occur at 1405 CAPPI w lightning 1404-1407 and 2 more again at 1416 CAPPI 1415-1417 just a little NE of where the Citation will fly in regions in which 4 km CAPPIs show structure of many small cells. By the time of the Citation takeoff at ~1600 the radar structure over KSC shows only a little return at 4km, most at 7 km and some at 10km. The structure is not like an anvil, it's more like an umbrella of mid level outflow pushed up from below, but with some precip. at lower levels falling from above. From ~1445 to ~1600 the reflectivity at 7km maintains 20 to 25 dBZ even though low-level convective activity at 4 km has vanishing -- suggests convergence at mid-levels? The Citation flies under the E end of this area from as it climbs from 6 to 9 km. MEmag is very weak. CAPPI w lightning 1608 to 16122 MER 1610-1620 At 8km still ascending but moving E across the band MEmag ~1 kV/m. Then from ~1626 to 1630 the A/C flies just in the top at 10 km, and finds Emag <1 kV/m. CAPPI w lightning 1626-1629 MER 1620-1630 The plane descends to 8 km and in reciprocal W-E passes at 1640 to 1642, 1646-1650 and again at 1653 to 1656 MEmag is 1.5 to 3 kV/m while KEmag shows 3-4 kV/m. CAPPIs with lightning 1648-1650 and 1656 to 1658 MER plots 1640-1650, 1640-1650 and 1650-1700. Last CAPPI shows main reflectivity at 7 km, and only scattered at 4 and 10 km. For some reason this system seems to maintain marginal electric fields over an extended period of time. The M and K matrix solutions show significant disagreement.
